Women’s bodies were designed to grow, birth, and nurture babies.  When birth is allowed to happen normally, our bodies work very well.  However, technological interference with the normal process of labor and birth can cause problems that lead to complications and avoidable interventions.

Some procedures during labor seem inconsequential but lead to the need for other, less benign procedures and interventions. This concept of "cascading intervention" is a good one to keep in mind when asking about procedures and interventions you may be offered or be required to undergo during labor.

There are some great books for expectant parents that explain the process of normal birth and strategies for decreasing interventions that might derail that process. BirthNet's book list for parents.

In the Capital Region, some local organizations support women and their partners in their desire for a birth with few interventions.
